Tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road. When they wear out, everything else suffers — your braking distance gets longer, your handling gets sloppier, and in rain you risk hydroplaning. The good news is, telling when it's time for new tires isn't complicated.
The Penny Test
The classic check still works. Take a penny and stick it head-down into the tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, your tread is below 2/32 of an inch — that's the legal minimum, and it's well past the point where your tires perform safely. If Lincoln's head is partially covered, you're getting close. If only the very top of his head shows, you've still got useful tread.
Wear Bars
Modern tires have built-in wear indicators called wear bars. These are small raised bars running across the bottom of the tread grooves. When the surface of your tread is even with those bars, the tire is at the legal wear limit and needs to go. You can spot them once you know what to look for.
Uneven Wear Is a Warning Sign
If your tires are wearing more on one edge than the other, or in patches, the tire itself isn't always the problem. Uneven wear usually points to alignment issues, suspension problems, or improper inflation. Replacing the tires without fixing the underlying cause will just chew up the new ones too.
Age Matters Too
Even if your tread looks fine, rubber breaks down over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires that are six years old or older, regardless of how they look. Check the DOT code on the sidewall — the last four digits tell you the week and year the tire was made.
Other Signs to Watch For
- Visible cracks or dry rot on the sidewalls
- Bulges or blisters on the surface
- Frequent loss of air pressure
- Vibration that wasn't there before
- Cuts or punctures that can't be safely patched
