Questions to Ask Before Letting a Mechanic Work on Your Car

Walking into an auto shop can feel like walking into a casino β€” you don't quite know the rules, and you suspect the house always wins. The fix isn't to become a mechanic yourself. It's to ask a few simple questions that any honest shop will answer easily.

1. Can I Get a Written Estimate Before You Start Work?

Any reputable shop will give you a written estimate before turning a wrench. The estimate should list parts, labor, and the total. If a shop refuses, walk away β€” you have no protection against the bill ballooning.

2. Will You Call Me Before Doing Anything Beyond the Estimate?

Sometimes the diagnosis turns up a second problem, or a part is more damaged than expected. An honest shop calls you with options before doing the extra work. A bad shop does the work first and asks you to pay later.

3. Can You Show Me the Worn Part After You Replace It?

This is the simplest honesty test there is. If they replaced your brake pads, can they show you the old ones? Worn brake pads look obviously worn. If they can't or won't show you, ask why.

4. Do You Use OEM, Aftermarket, or Used Parts?

OEM parts come from the original manufacturer and tend to fit and last best. Quality aftermarket parts are often nearly as good for less money. Cheap aftermarket parts can be unreliable. There's nothing wrong with any of these as long as the shop tells you upfront which they're using.

5. What's Your Warranty?

Most reputable shops warranty their parts and labor for at least 12 months or 12,000 miles, sometimes longer. Get the warranty terms in writing. If a part fails within warranty, you should not be paying for the same fix twice.

6. What's the Diagnostic Fee, and Does It Apply Toward Repairs?

Many shops charge a diagnostic fee β€” usually $50 to $150 β€” to figure out what's wrong. That's reasonable, especially for difficult electrical or drivability issues. But ask whether the diagnostic fee gets credited toward the repair if you have the work done. Many shops will, especially if you ask.

7. Can I See What You Found?

If a shop says you need a major repair, ask them to show you. Honest mechanics are happy to bring you into the bay and point at the leaking gasket or the worn-out bushing. If they get evasive about showing you, that's a red flag.

Why This Matters

These questions don't make you a difficult customer. They make you a smart one. The right shop welcomes them β€” it gives them a chance to demonstrate that they're being straight with you.
