Are Used Tires a Bad Idea? Not If You Buy Them Right

Used tires get treated like a dirty secret in the tire industry. Big chains won't sell them. Tire manufacturers don't advertise them. But for a lot of drivers β€” especially those who can't drop $600 on a new set β€” a quality used tire is a smart, safe option. The trick is buying them from a shop that knows what to look for.

When a Used Tire Makes Sense

Used tires shine in a few specific situations. If you only need to replace one tire because of a sidewall puncture or other damage, matching one used tire to the three good ones you already have is often smarter than mismatching brands or buying four new ones. If your vehicle is older or worth less than a new set of tires, used can keep you on the road affordably. And if money is tight right now and you need to drive to work tomorrow, a $30 used tire beats a flat one every time.

What We Inspect Before We Sell

Not every used tire is safe to put on a vehicle. At Bundy's, every used tire we install gets checked for a few things first:

  • Tread depth β€” minimum 4/32 of an inch, plenty of life left
  • Sidewall condition β€” no cracks, bulges, or dry rot
  • Tread wear pattern β€” even wear, no signs of alignment issues
  • Internal damage β€” no signs of previous run-flat damage or impact breaks
  • Age β€” we don't sell tires that are too old, regardless of tread
  • Plug or patch history β€” only safe repairs, no improper plugs

When You Should Buy New Instead

Used tires are great for short-term needs and budget-conscious drivers. But if you're planning to keep your vehicle for many more years, drive long distances, or do a lot of highway driving, a new set of tires is the better long-term value. New tires last longer, perform better in extreme weather, and come with a warranty.
